How does it work?
Repellents deter insects by reducing their attraction to humans for their blood. Only female mosquitoes bite and draw blood. Because their bodies need it to make eggs, they are initially attracted to humans by carbon dioxide and then choose the best tasting spot to bite. Using a repellent makes you less tasty and less likely to be bitten.
How long will it last?
The labels on our products recommend that you re-apply repellent when required. Some people attract more insects than others and may need to re-apply more often. Generally you should re-apply Tropical Strength repellent at least every 4 hours for mozzies and 3 hours for sandflies.
What is the difference in using DEET compared to a Natural Formula?
DEET is a chemical repellent that has a very strong smell and is known to deter insects for up to 5 hours. Insects develop a resistance to the chemicals so the formulas are often upgraded to be stronger when reviewed. DEET has also been known to irritate the skin on some people. Natural repellent can also be an irritant when made using a strong formula. We have 2 formulas; Natural Insect Repellent and Tropical Strength- both need application more regularly between 3 and 4 hours– choose the one that suits your conditions.
Are these products suitable for children, babies and elderly people?
Generally all repellents are not suitable for the new skin on young babies, and should only be used on those 6 months or more. If you are applying to children’s skin please do so under supervision particularly so that their eyes are avoided. Never spray directly on the face. The rule for both children and elderly is to test on the arm first and if there is a reaction discontinue use. You are able to dilute the formula to apply to young skin: Mix 75% Water with 25% product, and patch test somewhere safe.
How can I avoid getting bitten?
Frequently we are asked this question by people who have adverse; sometimes painful reactions to bites from mosquitoes and sandflies. These strategies may help.
Cover up – wear light long sleeves and pants the insects cannot bite through.
Avoid areas at sunset and sunrise when mozzies are most active.
Be aware – at the full moon sandflies/midges are more actively mating
Be vigilant with the use of repellents – make sure you have good cover on all exposed skin.
Don’t go out without repellent – keep it close in your bag or your vehicle.
