As you’d know from reading our amazing benefits of lemon myrtle blog, lemon myrtle has incredible health benefits, including when used in essential oils.
Essential oils harness the high antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties in lemon myrtle, and enable this amazing plant to be used in a myriad of new ways with only a few drops, including in cleaning as a spray, in the washing machine as a deodoriser, and in an oil burner or through aromatherapy.
This last point is especially beneficial to our physiological and emotional health, utilising essential oils in a therapeutic way. According to an aromatherapy Healthline article, accessible by clicking here,
“Humans have used aromatherapy for thousands of years. Ancient cultures in China, India, and Egypt incorporated aromatic plant components in resins, balms, and oils. These natural substances were used for medical and religious purposes.”
Here at Lemon Myrtle Fragrances, we have two essential oils: the 100% pure tea tree essential oil and the 100% pure lemon scented tea tree essential oil. These are both native oils sourced from Australian farms who use local unpolluted water to make oils with the best aroma, antibacterial and other cleansing properties. All essential Lemon Myrtle Oil from Lemon Myrtle Fragrances (which is used in most of our other products!) has a very high citral content over 95% which is effective when burning in a little water.

Benefits
- Increase mood
Not only does aromatherapy help create an uplifting environment, but it reduces anxiety by stimulating activity in your hypothalamus, which signals the brain to release feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin. Oils like tea tree also increases mental clarity, enabling better focus when used.
- Strengthens health
The antimicrobial properties in oils used in aromatherapy can kill unwanted pathogens like fungi and bacteria in the rooms used. These benefits also transfer when inhaled, providing further benefits for respiratory health as your airways are stimulated and supported. These antibacterial properties can also benefit the skin, helping to combat acne and other blemishes.
- Smells amazing
Aromatherapy infuses your space with amazing smells that can be tailored and changed to suit your individual preferences. This helps balance your emotions and support the atmosphere you need to best succeed day-to-day, promoting positivity in every area of your life, from busy work days to calming weekends of relaxation.
Vapour can also cleanse the air, leaving all of your visitors with a lasting, unique lemon myrtle memory that you barely have to think about!
Aromatherapy Techniques
- Diffusion
One of the simplest ways to enjoy aromatherapy’s benefits is through diffusion. Use an essential oil diffuser to disperse the aroma of your choice throughout your space. A few drops of lemon myrtle oil can uplift your mood and create a refreshing atmosphere. For a calming blend, mix it with lavender or chamomile oils, or use our tea tree oil to create a rejuvenating space.
- Inhalation
For a quick pick-me-up, inhale the scent directly from the bottle or place a few drops on a cotton ball. You can also add lemon myrtle to a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel, and breathe deeply to increase the effectiveness of its benefits. (Tip: This is a must do if you have a head cold!)
- Massage
Diluting lemon myrtle oil with a carrier oil, such as jojoba or sweet almond oil, makes it perfect for massages. This combination can not only enhance relaxation but also promote skin health. Again, add in tea tree or lemon essential oil to increase the antibacterial benefits.
- Bathing
Adding lemon myrtle essential oil to your bath is an easy way to create a luxurious spa-like experience. Combine a few drops with Epsom salts or a carrier oil, add it to your bath and see the benefits for yourself!
Safety and Precautions
While lemon myrtle essential oil is generally considered safe, it’s always wise to perform a patch test before applying it to the skin to ensure your skin isn’t sensitive to it. Remember to dilute any essential oil whenever possible to reduce overuse (and extend its lifespan!)
Anyone who is pregnant or nursing, as well as those with specific health concerns, should always consult a healthcare professional before use.
