We all want our skin to look and feel its best, and there are a seemingly endless number of skincare products on the market that promise to help us achieve that goal. However, not all skincare products are created equal, and many of them contain ingredients that can actually do far more harm than good, and have long-lasting effects which only become apparent as we age.
In this blog post, we will explore some of the "nasties" that you need to be aware of so you can avoid putting them on your skin.
Parabens
Parabens are a group of chemicals that are commonly used as preservatives in skincare products. They help to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in products, extending their shelf life. However, parabens have been linked to health concerns such as hormone disruption and cancer. To avoid parabens, look for products that are labeled "paraben-free."
Phthalates
Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are often used as plasticisers in skincare products. They help to make products more pliable and easier to work with. However, like parabens, phthalates have been linked to hormone disruption and other health concerns. To avoid phthalates, look for products that are labeled "phthalate-free."
Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are used in skincare products as preservatives to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. However, formaldehyde has been classified as a known human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives have been linked to allergies and other health concerns. To avoid these ingredients, look for products that are labeled "formaldehyde-free" or "formaldehyde-releasing preservative-free."
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
SLS and SLES are surfactants that are commonly used in skincare products to create a foaming effect. However, they can be harsh on the skin and have been linked to skin irritation and other health concerns. To avoid SLS and SLES, look for products that are labeled "SLS-free" or "SLES-free."
Fragrance
Fragrance is a catch-all term that can refer to a wide range of ingredients that are added to skincare products to make them smell good. However, many of these ingredients are synthetic and can be harmful to the skin, causing irritation and allergic reactions. To avoid fragrance, look for products that are labeled "fragrance-free" or "unscented."
*NB: Lemon Myrtle Fragrances uses ONLY essential oils! You don't need to be concerned about the "fragrance" in our name!!
In addition to these five "nasties," there are many other ingredients that you should be aware of and avoid in skincare products. Oxybenzone, triclosan, and mineral oil are just a few examples.
Here are some tips to help you avoid buying skincare products with these "nasties:"
- Read the ingredient label: Always read the ingredient label before buying any skincare product. Look for the ingredients that we mentioned in this post and avoid products that contain them.
- Look for certifications: Some organisations certify products as being free from harmful ingredients. Look for certifications like "USDA Certified Organic," "Leaping Bunny Certified," “Australian Certified Organic,” or "EWG Verified."
- Do your research: Look up products and brands online to see if they have a history of using harmful ingredients. You can also check out online reviews to see what other people have to say about the products you're interested in.
- Stick to natural ingredients: There’s never been a better time to switch to products with natural ingredients. They are more effective, safer and better for your health and our environment. Read our blog post on the benefits of switching to natural products. Look for skincare products that contain natural ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and essential oils like lemon myrtle. These ingredients are typically safe and effective for most people.
- Choose brands that offer organic and natural products: Find skincare brands that have a history of producing safe and effective products. You can usually find information about a brand's history and reputation online.
